Project Highlights 2019

Abutting on the hillside of the famous Alishan and being adjacent to several local industrial parks, the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) has abundance of technological drive and cultural resources to develop in many disciplines. In the past three decades since establishment, the University has constantly worked with governments and industries, institutions and individuals, locally and globally, to pioneer research and educate students in areas such as smart systems, precision machinery, chemical engineering, social welfare policies, law and criminology to bear on the challenges of the AI generation and the aging society. Young and energetic, CCU currently has a community of nearly 12,000 degree candidates, faculties and staff from over the world, and has devoted herself to pursuing excellence in teaching, learning, and researching.


MISSION
The mission of CCU is to advance, disseminate, and preserve knowledge. With funding of Higher Education Sprout Project from the Ministry of Education, we will constantly and confidently support our faculties to introduce and adopt modern teaching methodology and technology, and also to encourage students to take part in interdisciplinary studies, so as to make sure that every member of our community gets ready for the coming challenges of AI generation.

PERFORMANCE

Since 2018, CCU has constantly received grants and funds from the Ministry of Education to execute a new education reform, the so-called Higher Education Sprout Project, aiming to advance teaching, to leverage the University-specific edges, and to deepen the University’s influence and role into the society. Under this framework, CCU has proposed and implemented a comprehensive series of actions, including:

u  Implementation of innovative education and improvement of teaching quality

  1. Strengthening interdisciplinary programs and general education
    1. Training interdisciplinary research team, which won a silver medal of iGEM 2019 in the USA.
    2. Organize 16 “Chung Cheng Lectures,” inviting role models from various aspects including industry, government, university, and research. There are also a series of activities that took place in the “CCU Art Exhibition.”
    3. Improve General English credit waive standards and adjust the course content to encourage students to strengthen their foreign language communication skills.
    4. Carry out international cultural-related activities and all-English teaching workshops to promote international student exchanges and interactions, experience international culture, and cultivate international perspectives.
    5. General Chinese courses aim to strengthen students' ability to life narrative and short speaking. Improve the teaching ability of the teaching team and assistants through the operation of a sound teacher community.
    6. Optimize the teaching field, such as building a solar demonstration teaching system, wind-solar complementary LED intelligent street lights, smart weather stations, real-time air quality monitoring and data systems.
  2. Innovation of teaching methods and materials
    1. Import standard-compliant teaching materials of MOOCs, and train teachers and students to require the skills of planning teaching materials and recording knowledge.
    2. Provide development tools for VR teaching materials, and import the virtualized innovative experimental teaching materials and the design of contextual courses.
    3. In 2019, 4 MOOCs digital courses started on the online platform and blended learning curriculum, and the quality of the teaching materials of 1 distance course was improved.
    4. Strengthen the smart interactive classroom:
      1. To introduce a new digital curriculum teaching environment and technology.
      2. To Foster teachers and students to learn new interactive digital curriculum technology.
      3. To Improve the interaction between teachers and teaching materials.
  3. Dissemination of courses of logic operation and programming language
    1. The number of students taking courses in logical operations and programming language has been a total of 1098 students within 2018-2019.
    2. Promote interdisciplinary collaborative robotics research, First Place in the 108 Taiwan FEU Robotics Creativity and Innovation Competition, and an Honorable Mention in the World Robot Olympiad National Finals.
    3. Promote a series of teaching courses such as intelligent vision system for robot arm course, robotic AI and collaboration courses, and robotics and network programming courses, to cultivate students' practical ability and cultivate talents for future Industry 4.0.
    4. Carry out a school-wide programming competition, and the participation rate of non-CSIE students has increased by 4.42% compared with 107 years. It shows that students' willingness to participate and interest in learning has gradually increased.
    5. Continue to promote the teacher community of logic and programming application, and develop the CCU basic programming teaching platform, and promote the training of the teaching aid system for school programming course teachers.
  4. Development of innovative startups courses and connection with core industry
    1. Complete the establishment of the innovation and entrepreneurship course, which was officially implemented in the second semester of 2019 academic year, to enhance students' willingness of innovation and entrepreneurship.
    2. High-quality innovation and entrepreneurship training course.
      1. Innovation and entrepreneurship courses (covering business management, finance, telecommunications, etc.): 15 courses have established with subsidies.
      2. Big data courses (including R language application analysis, multimedia systems, primary data analysis, medical big data analysis and application, and seminar in precision agriculture): 5 courses have established with subsidies.
      3. Smart Precision Machinery Course: 1 course have established with subsidies.
      4. Green energy industry courses (including thermodynamics, hydrogen energy and fuel cells, forward-looking green energy and environmental protection technology, seminar in green energy, and seminar in energy and power system): 5 courses have established with subsidies.
    3. Recommend three teachers to “Babson Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teaching and Training Camp” and two teachers to participate in the “Babson College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teacher Training Workshop” and return to CCU to share innovative teaching methods and experiences.
    4. “Chang-Yun-Chia 15 colleges and universities entrepreneurship competition” took place in 2018. In 2019, for the first time, it was expanded to national college and university dream realizing entrepreneurship competition, to enhance students' success in innovation and entrepreneurship through practice.
    5. Professional innovation and entrepreneurship cultivation industry-university guidance - introducing the industry to carry out practice and guidance for innovation and entrepreneurship:
      1. Completion of the formulation of counseling training regulations and contracts, stationing contracts: listed counseling content, resources, entry and exit mechanisms, etc.
      2. Cooperative cultivation: for the first time in 2019, CCU cooperated with the stock counter trading center to cultivate the counter board.
  5. Promotion of professional development and diversified qualifying for teachers
    1. Revise the “National Chung Cheng University Regulation for Evaluation of Faculty” and amend the “National Chung Cheng University Guidelines for Guidance in Faculty Evaluation”
      1. To assist teachers (including researchers) to continuously improve their teaching, research, and service through the reward and guidance mechanism.
      2. Implement teacher evaluation to ensure the quality of education. One teacher has successfully applied for the promotion with the achievement of artistic work.
    2. In response to topics such as the production of advanced technology teaching materials, care for the elderly human rights, the development of teachers' competency, and the growth of teaching in professional fields, various teacher professional communities were subsidized and organized.
  6. Intelligent application of teaching resources and improvement of learning results
  1. Construct a digital learning platform, integrate the platforms used in the past, sharply reduce the costs of management and maintenance, improve long-term scalability, and provide a complete learning model.
    1. Build a system for analysis of student learning status and course recommendation, visualize learning results, and increase overall computing efficiency by 33%.
    2. Promoting a career-oriented learning guidance mechanism, the total number of participants has increased by 11% compared with 2018.
    3. The Navigation system for course map learning: The utilization rate of 2019 future course plans is 75.9%.
    4. Teaching administrative assistance for curriculum improvement: Encourage departments to set up "Core Competency Verification Courses." In 2019, a total of 13 departments received subsidies, an increase of 2 departments compared with last year, providing students with more opportunities to examine core abilities and apply what they have learned.

 

u  Development of university features

  1. Top-notch technology and forming communities
    1. Industry-University Cooperation Settlement Shapes Implementation Mode:
      1. Linking and achievement sharing of Industry-University cooperation: New technology and new product launch conference in Xinying Industrial Park to achieve 1) the disclosure of manufacturer patents and product and 2) the promotion of National Chung Cheng University R&D industry-university cooperation results.
      2. Digital dentistry:
        1. Facilitating international cooperation, CCU has cooperated with one domestic manufacturer and four foreign manufacturers. (the United States, Canada, Germany, South Korea)
        2. Actively participate in domestic and foreign large-scale exhibitions and annual meetings to promote technology and improve visibility.
        3. Establish a dental demonstration center, combining five advanced guidance demonstration centers: clinical digital dental center, digital design center, digital manufacturing center, equipment development center, and material research and development center.
        4. Cultivation of digital dental talents: among the eight major dental colleges in Taiwan, CCU has cooperated with the NTUCM School of Dentistry, NYMU School of Dentistry, CSMU College of Oral Medicine, and KMU, offering digital dental courses and providing digital dental software practice and internship place for dental product production, to train domestic digital dental talents.
        5. Localized dental services: In the year of 2019, in addition to continuing to operate the developed customers, further software optimization and digital order services were carried out with “FengHo Dental Clinic” and “Cambridge Dental Clinic”, and even increase the cooperation with “Special & Perfect Dental Clinic” and “ChunHao Dental Clinic”.
      3. Nano bioassay:
        1. Develop intelligent fish farm technology and develop sensor chips to detect pool water pollution in real time.
        2. Startup Company participated in the “2019 TRANS Biomedical Innovation Forum”, which selected as only two teams in Taiwan. The team will go to the Merck Innovation Center in Germany to participate in the innovation and entrepreneurship competition.
  2. Exploration of artificial intelligence and discovering of the future
    1. Intelligent machinery and intelligent robot self-made base experimental field: 2 experimental fields have been built, 4 courses and 7 lectures have been handled, and a total of 339 participants.
    2. Experimental field of fintech and intelligent governance: 2 fintech lectures, 3 experimental courses, and 1 corporate visit have been handled.
    3. Intelligence virtual reality theater experimental field: 6 AI industry-university collaborations, 3 papers related to the project published, 4 experimental curriculums, and a total of 162 students have selected courses.
    4. Digital Humanities: Held 6 ancient document reading sessions, interpreted 12 ancient books, conducted 2 seminars, gave 1 ancient document guide lecture, published 4 related research, 1 research paper, and 1 book on ancient documents of the Zeng family.
  3. Interdisciplinary collaboration and social co-prosperity
    1. It is jointly implemented by the ASEAN and South Asia Research Center (ASARC), International Leadership Institute of Education (I-LIFE), and Center for Innovative Research on Aging Society (CIRAS). Through interdisciplinary links, and connect resources of the three centers from various aspects including industry, government, academic, and research, and cultivate international talents of different professions to step into the southbound countries.
    2. Through exchanges with Taiwanese businessmen in southbound countries, and conduct transnational industry-university cooperation, "Taiwan-Thai Enterprise Elites and National Chung Cheng University Industry-Academic Cooperation Forum" and the "Taiwan-Malaysia Halal Industry Policy Forum " were held between 2018 and 2019. With these activities, the R&D achievements of National Chung Cheng University is capable to link with the industrial development of Taiwanese businessmen in the southbound countries, and thus establish a transnational industry-university cooperation mechanism.
    3. Establish a halal certification resource platform: in response to the expansion and the demand of the halal industry and business opportunities, hold halal certification seminars, workshops, and forums, provide halal-certification market development strategy analysis. Assist and tutor Taiwanese companies’ products to acquire halal certification. Promote various industries in Taiwan to develop the halal market and cultivate halal-certified seed consultants.

u  Improvement of higher education publicity

  1. Cultivating of disadvantaged students
    1. CCU aims to expand the enrollment rate of disadvantaged students, through multiple admission channels and publicity. In the 2019 academic year, the enrollment rate of disadvantaged students increased by 14.5% compared with the 2018 academic year.
    2. The investigation rate of high-risk students is high, to achieve 95% in the 2019 academic year.
    3. A series of activities for “Dream Realizing and Career Development”, 1 large-scale annual meeting event, including 5 short TED Talks, 2 sofa talks and interactions at the exhibition, 7 corporate briefings, and career experience lectures from alumni. There were 47 lectures in total in the year, and the number of participants increased by 530 people compared with 2018.
    4. The improvement rate of subject warning for Jiaxing (Disadvantaged) students: In the second semester of the 2018 academic year, in conjunction with the revision of the 2019-year plan, the improvement rate of early warning guidance for students was revised to a subject basis. During the semester, the improvement rate of Jiaxing (Disadvantaged) students who receive a subject warning was 50.3%.
  2. Program of cultivating teachers
    1. Enhance teachers' professional ability by means of workshops, textbook subsidies, and a total of 2 teachers have passed the CPAS instructor certification.
    2. The establishment of the "Learning Care for Disadvantaged Students and Innovative Teaching Professional Community " enhance teachers' professional knowledge. Teachers can instantly identify students’ obstacles in the classroom and give guidance to strengthen students’ learning ability and effectiveness.
    3. Curriculum professional planning: through the forum with senior high school, understand that the high school has four main axes in the direction of collaboration with the university, including multiple lectures, professional curriculum planning, camp training, and assistance in the implementation of the Ministry of Science and Technology project. Teaching workshops provide teaching training, linking the 12-year national education curriculum, and training seed teachers.
  3. Applying and publicizing school materials
    1. Construct the system data project, basic data project, and the project of exploring the topic.
    2. Complete a total of 20 topic analyses, and the scope has gradually extended from academic affairs to student affairs and international exchanges. The result would be reported on university-level meetings, which would use as a reference for teaching improvement.
    3. Complete two types of index analysis of campus information data. One is the visualization of the learning system data of the Office of Academic Affairs and the CCU performance dashboard (5 items).
  4. Promoting open universities
    1. Build an open university website.
    2. The Ching-Jiang Learning Center integrates the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and cooperates in lecturer training. Students who have passed the lecturer training offer local practice courses based on their expertise, serve the local people, and provide residents with more learning opportunities.
    3. Develop and promote digital education courses to maximize participation in lifelong learning: produce several different types of teaching videos so that people in different regions may have the opportunity to contact the CCU extension education courses.

u  Fulfilling the university social responsibilities

  1. Bamboo and bamboo charcoal innovation-sustainable consumption and production
    1. Practicing P-PBL, providing teachers and students thematic groups to communicate with local aquaculture farmers in the Chiayi county to understand the water use status.
    2. Practice P-PBL, uncover hidden cultural stories through site visits, preserve and promote local characteristics, effectively develop creative touristic content, create employment, and thus lead the return of immigrants.
    3. Promote the e-marketing of bamboo products and create enhanced applications in the local bamboo industry.
  2. Seeding, crystallization, sublimationproject for elevating high school science education in Yunlin-Chiayi areas
    1. Cooperate with local education institutions to carry out various activities to improve the effectiveness of science education.
    2. Encourage the atmosphere of scientific research in junior high schools and stimulate students' interest and potential in scientific research.
    3. Enhance the atmosphere of the physical activity of junior high school students so that students could enjoy the fun of physical activity and increase the attention to health.
    4. In 2019, CCU coach teachers and students of elementary and junior high schools in the Yunlin-Chiayi area in science exhibitions. The first stage is the guidance of the local science exhibition (14 out of 16 entries awarded); the second stage is the guidance of the national science exhibition (5 out of 15 entries awarded).
    5. Carry out courses and workshops in the field of science and technology. To enhance middle school teachers and to give students a practice experience.
  3. Restructure of university road: recognition, identification and joint action
    1. Carry out in-depth interviews on different themes so that the executors get to know the local and leave a fruitful historical record for Minxiong.
    2. The finished work will give feedback to the interviewees, and follow-up use, cooperation, and promotion will be carried out with related organizations.
    3. Discuss with the residents, create together, and empower each other, so that the community and the school teachers and students can work together and discuss local affairs together. Prolong the care of the old trees, culture, and history. Cooperate with Tong-Rong Primary School and Feng-Shou Community to carry out the "Lian-Lian Mango Burning Village" off-campus native teaching, combining the local knowledge, survey results of community residents and CCU teachers and students, and experience plucking mangoes. Allow native education to establish the foundation in the community and generate local identity.
    4. "Reconstruct University Road" has two primary meanings: reflect and clarify "The Way of the University." Rebuild and assume appropriate social responsibilities. Reconcile with the locals, learn from the villagers, face, and solve problems together. And rebuild the relationship between the teachers and students of CCU and the neighborhood.
    5. Besides, CCU teachers and students live along the "University Road" which is also the only way to downtown and connect with the locals as well. There are various cultural landscapes and lifestyles along the way. We hope to accumulate local knowledge through multiple methods. To fully understand the local, to preserve the collective memory of Min-Xiong Township, and to understand local issues, work hand in hand with local community residents, and build a "Dovoha" local database to save and share the local data.
  4. Fulfilling the university social responsibility and school supporting system
    1. Through the project office and advisory committee, continue to promote teacher training and student social practice, and set up credit courses to encourage teachers and students to go out of the campus and cultivate a sense of identity.
