Summary and Highlights of Goal Accomplishments
National Chengchi University (NCCU) has completed Phase I of the Higher Education SPROUT Project. The joint efforts of the President, teachers, and students across the institution have yielded concrete results,production wonderful research outcomes, and transforming into diverse we and multicultural campus in Taiwan. As the same time, NCCU has undergone crucial transformations, emphasizing importance of contributing of research outcomes toward teaching innovation and talent cultivation as well as the integration of humanities and social sciences with digital information. It is hoped that in the future, NCCU will become a university that spearheads higher education development in Taiwan. Highlights of NCCU's accomplishments include:
[Global Highlight: Chia-luen International Sinology Chair]
The Lo Chia-luen International Sinology Chair was established in memory of Mr. Lo Chia-luen for his contributions to NCCU and to Taiwan. Academician Yu Ying-shih of Academia Sinica was invited to serve as its first professor emeritus, and Academician David Der-wei Wang of Academia Sinica to serve as its first chair. In 2019, Academician David Der-wei Wang presented an introductory discussion and three lectures under the title "Intellectuals in Moments of Crisis: History, Ideas, and Literature", which attracted many NCCU teachers, students, and alumni, as well as external experts and scholarsto attend.
[Golbal Highlight: International Summer School (ISS)]
Aiming toward "internationalization of teachers", "internationalization of students", and "internationalization of language", NCCU launched intensive international summer and semester courses in 2019. The International Summer School (ISS) includes a total of 10 courses offered by the College of Communication, College of Law, Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, Department of Economics, and other departments/institutes. Teachers and students from the United States, Germany, Japan, and other countries were invited to participate in the courses. These courses were taught by 14 international teachers and taken by 61 international students. In Fall 2019, 12 courses were offered by the College of Law, College of Education, Department of Chinese Literature, Department of Diplomacy, Department of Ethnology, and the Graduate Institute of Taiwan History.
[Developing Institutional Distinctiveness: New Southbound Overseas Office]
In order to continually intensify cooperation with partner universities from ASEAN countries, NCCU established its first New Southbound Overseas Office in Bangkok, Thailand in December 2019. The office is responsible for expanding overseas student recruitment as well as enhancing overseas internships, innovation and entrepreneurship training, and alumni services. The delegates of NCCU who unveiled the office in Bangkok also visited Thammasat University, Chulalongkorn University, and National Institute of Development Administration. These institutions reached consensuses regarding an increase of exchange students, teacher exchange programs, and joint launch of international courses.
[Achieving Teaching Innovation and Improving Teaching Quality: Interdisciplinary Learning]
NCCU has abolished the thresholds for signing up for minors, lowered the requirements for taking double majors, included information science amid the core courses of general education, and offered 6 new interdisciplinary credit-based courses to assist students in interdisciplinary learning. In 2018, 470 students were taking double majors, while 1,155 students had signed up for minors. In 2019, 489 students were taking double majors, while 1,161 students had signed up for minors.
[Fulfilling Social Responsibility: Placemaking for Fuxing Township, Changhua County]
In October 2019, NCCU and Fuxing Township, Changhua County signed a cooperation agreement to jointly encourage young farmers' return to Fuxing Township, form a local organic food and farming culture, plan the itineraries of East Fuxing travel and aerodrome story house tours, and assist the township office in building an industry pavilion and assembly hall. In addition, NCCU also initiated the 50 + 1 Social Enterprise project, which aims to gather support from 50 consumers (teachers, students, and alumni of NCCU) for each single farmer. Businesses and alumni associations were sought and pledged to assist NCCU in promoting the project.
