【Summary of Providence University’s Year 2019 for Higher Education SPROUT Project Report】
A. Taking Teaching as the Core
(a) The whole university practices an innovative education system.
Providence University consistently integrates course in a vertical dimension in the new innovated education system. The University started to build a four-year learning path implementing it with the freshmen project system in 2019.
(b) Providence University advances microcredit courses.
The university provides students flexibility gaining practical experience in both “interdisciplinary , microcredit” and “professional microcredit” courses holding the concept of fine, simple micro and beauty.
(c) Deepening our roots in the central region of Taiwan at the innovative teaching center.
We take high school students on a walk out of their current learning frame and into learning by utilizing the university’s “outdoor educational microcredit courses” as well as “Taichung Study.”
(d) The regional base of SOTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) is located at Providence University.
The university was entrusted with organizing the 2020 annual regional SOTL base project. By being the central based school, we would unite all the other universities in the central Taiwan area and encourage teachers to organize cross-school communities to establish new teaching motivation.
(e) Providence University drives students' skills.
The skills we will be establishing include: the ability to communicate, information competence, and cross-domain thematic performance. The university obtained the official authorization from TED to independently organize the “2018 TEDxProvidenceUniversity (Horizon)”. We once again obtained the official authorization to independently organize the second one in “2020 TEDxProvidenceUniversity(Uprising)”.
B. Developing University Features
(a) Strengthening our learning chain for Language - Culture - International Mobility - Global Career.
The university uses academic English-oriented courses that empower students to improve their English skills to the TOEFL ITP 500 (standard of exchanging abroad). The average passing rate for the 2018 academic year was 40.35%. We have encouraged 54 students to apply to exchange programs in America, Japan, Netherlands, France and 12 other countries. This shows how the courses can effectively help students prepare to travel abroad.
Providence University has set a new record by being the country’s first in gaining the subsidy from MOE’s “Study Abroad Scholarship.”
(b) The accumulation of our international energy has been recognized by the society.
We’ve been nominated to be in the 2019 Top 20 Best University Performance, one of our best projects includes foreign exchange students coming to Taiwan as well as students traveling abroad. The Ministry of Education has also awarded Providence for being the first to gain subsidies from MOE’s for four different “Study Abroad Scholarships” two years in a row.
(c) The whole class choses to travel abroad for International Business Administration Program.
There was a total of 116 students who chose to study abroad in 2018 to 2019, to study for a double degree, overseas internship and exchange program. The university’s travelling abroad rate is 100% each academic year.
(d) To Create New Achievements in Foreign Languages:
- A graduate student from the Department of Spanish Language and Linguistic was selected for the year 2019’s 16th Translation Scholarship for Unified Digital Translation (PTSGI.com). This achievement had only 20 elected participants each was award an amount of $15,000.
- A student was selected along with 75 other nominees to be part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “International Youth Ambassadors” in 2019, being the spokesperson for the Philippians and Malaysia.
- One of our students’ took charge as the Spanish guide for the 2019 Latin America and the Caribbean’s Diplomatic Country Technical Training Project.
- Students of the Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistic received grants from the Ministry of Education for the project “Multicultural and Cross-domain Industry Internship” which headed to Yu Ming Charter School, CA. This internship dealt with Chinese teaching. Another student from the same department participated in the same project but headed to St. Louise Language Immersion School, LA as an intern in teaching Chinese.
- A student from the Department of Japanese won the third place in the 13th National University Japanese Speech Competition.
C. Making Resources more Public
(a) Providence University is recognized for promoting vulnerable assistance mechanisms.
The university was invited to participate in the press conference dealing with how universities assist vulnerable students. This assistance mechanism in the Higher Education SPROUT Project is a merit university by the Ministry of Education. We were able to spread our educational concept of self-expectation in loving children first before education.
(b) Implementation on the top-notch training series project university wide.
Through training student teams, we are able to build on their narrative skills and video editing, and build a platform for the peers to exchange their experience. We have filmed over 42 videos for the students to share about their learning experience for the 2018-2019 school year.
(c) Implementation of the university's obligations for self-governance and information disclosure.
We take the initiative to disclose information such as the university’s SPROUT Project, school affairs and financial analysis, tuition fees and school grants, student employment and income, internal control audit execution, etc. to provide detailed reference to the public.
D. Fulfilling Social Responsibility
(a) Reinventing professional and local service patterns for the departments in the university.
We guide students to make good use of their professional abilities to connect with local needs and implement learning integration by combining Freshman Service Learning and Professional Service Learning. These two service learning projects combine Guidance in Script Writing, Microcredit Courses, Special Services and Service Innovation.
(b) Intensive Professional Services Learning Teaching Module.
Through planning more in depth service projects, we are able to gain experience in collaborating with different enterprises and NGO’s, to strengthen our sensitivity towards social needs and overall implementation. These projects evaluated the student participants in their professional service learning during the 2018-2019 school year. More than 80 percent of students were satisfied, and more than 85 percent participated in learning results.
(c) Develop our service types to both domestic areas and international locations.
The University’s Northern Thailand volunteer team was the only Taiwanese service team to be nominated to participate in the 26th “Anti-Drug Youth Sports Day” event on 3-29.
(d) Deepen the USR-B category to build a happy silver-haired ecosystem for those over 60.
The university has been given recognition for the Best Dynamic Practice Award at the 2nd University Social Responsibility Expo (USR EXPO).
