Practice of Collegiate Spirit in the Modern Era:

An Innovative Value-Added Project Centered on Humanities and Social Sciences Education



Our university envisions developing into a “collegiate university” and, during the second phase of the second stage (2023-2024) of the Higher Education SPROUT Project, aims to implement the “Practice of Collegiate Spirit in the Modern Era: An Innovative Value-Added Project Centered on Humanities and Social Sciences Education.” This initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by universities centered on humanities and social sciences, thereby gradually fulfilling the mission of shaping talents into leaders through collegiate university education. The highlights and achievements of the project are summarized as follows:



 



1. In the Aspect of “Teaching Innovation and Enhancement”:



Our university actively promotes faculty to engage academic study and research on teaching and learning. The average approval proportion on subsidy applications for the years 2023-2024 reached 38.61%, representing a 2.71% increase compared to the 35.9% in the year 2022. It indicates a significant rise in the proportion of subsidies received. Furthermore, according to the Ministry of Education’s performance indicators, 81 faculty members at our university offered cross-disciplinary courses in the year 2023, and it increased to 109 faculty members in the year 2024. Additionally, the proportion of our students who participated in self-directed learning courses or projects in the year 2023 is 55.32%, and it rose to 82.69% in the year 2024.



 



2. In the Aspect of “Fulfilling Social Responsibility”:



Since its establishment, our university fulfilled on the idea of “Deep Ploughing in Lan Yang, Providing Services for the Local,” and continued to connect with local communities, schools at all levels, and industries through issues, such as “Holistic Care” (including programs on “Promotion on Holistic Education” and “Public Welfare Classes”), “Deep Cultivation of Education” (including programs on “Lanyang Psychological Camp,” “Sports Team Teacher Training,” “Rooting in Lanyang - Mobile Reading: University Students Leading Reading in Schools,” and “Rooting in Lanyang - Mobile Reading: One-Day University Experience Camp”), and “Tribal Empowerment” (including programs on “Tribal Multicultural Empowerment Courses”), etc., in connection with local community. In 2023, our services are in connection with 12 townships in Yilan (including 26 schools on high schools and levels below, 42 local communities, and 10 local enterprises), with over 10,915 local residents participating in the various activities organized by our university.



 



3. In the Aspect of “Industry-Academia Co-op



According to the Ministry of Education’s performance indicators, the proportion of problem-based and practical courses offered by our faculty remained above 45% during the years 2023-2024. Additionally, a total of 131 activities on enhancement of learning at “problem-solving skills” (including courses, workshops, and activities on this field) were conducted, with an average benefit rating of 4.63 on a five-point scale. Furthermore, our university provides a variety of incentive grants and awards, including “Distinctive Research Project Grants,” “Journal Article Publication Awards,” “Faculty Patent Achievement Awards,” “External Project Execution Awards,” and “Management Fee Grants.” In the year 2023, a total of 172 projects were funded, amounting to 3,066,827 NTD. Lastly, to enhance students’ practical skills and abilities, our students formed an innovation and entrepreneurship team, entitled “U-Design Excellent Design Technology Innovation,” stood out among nearly 300 entries in 2023 Annual University Graduate Entrepreneurship Service Program (U-START), held by the Ministry of Education Youth Development Agency, and received a grant of 500,000 NTD to execute the program.



 



4. In the Aspect of “Making Resources More Public



 In 2023, our university implemented eight programs and projects, which are two “Secure Learning Programs” (including, “Excellent in Characters and Learning Awards,” and  “Learning Progress Awards”), four “Specialized field/subject Companion Learning Programs” (including, “Self-motivated Learning Project Grants,” “Workplace Experience and Certification Awards,” “Experiential Learning Support Grants,” and “Specialized field/subject Companion Learning Support Grants”), one “Diligent Learning on Cross-disciplinary Study Program” (including, “Self-motivated Study on Cross-disciplinary Study Awards”), and one “Local Co-Learning Program” (including, “Local Professional Learning Grants”). Through duo-cultivation on counseling and the co-op, a total of 1,105 disadvantaged students received learning grants and internship training support. According to “the Academic Performance of Economically or Culturally Disadvantaged Students after Counseling and Participation in Activities” of the Ministry of Education’s performance indicators, students of our university improved their grade points on learning and study by more than 3.6 points in both years of 2023 and 2024.
