Founded in 1980 along the shores of Xiziwan in Kaohsiung, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) is Taiwan's only top-tier university with its own coastline, upholding its core values of (AI)²: Artistic & Inclusive × Advanced & Innovative while striving to become a world-class comprehensive university that excels in both humanities and science & technology. The university has evolved to encompass ten colleges: Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Management, Marine Sciences, Social Sciences, Si-Wan, Medicine, Banking and Finance, and Semiconductor and Advanced Technology Research, with 9,973 enrolled students and 543 full-time faculty members as of the second semester of 2022-2023. In 2020, NSYSU firmly established its position as an "International Research University" and implemented a "Ten-Year Plan for English-Medium Instruction," followed by establishing the first national medical school in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung-Taitung region in 2022, dedicated to eliminating healthcare disparities in rural areas. According to 2024 global academic indicators, NSYSU has achieved top 1% global citations in 11 fields in the ESI database, while in various 2023 rankings, it placed among the top 5 comprehensive universities in Taiwan by CommonWealth Magazine with the second-highest social reputation, ranked 8th nationally in the QS World University Rankings, secured 4th place nationally in the number of subjects listed in QS Subject Rankings, and achieved 5th place nationally among young universities by Times Higher Education. With the vision of "becoming the Harvard of Southern Taiwan," NSYSU continues to advance its academic development and achieve its mission of "bringing NSYSU to the world stage."
