Transforming Lives Through Service: The Impact of Po-Ya School at Tunghai University
For 17 years, the Po-Ya School has championed holistic education, fostering personal growth and community engagement. Last summer, in 2023, Po-Ya students independently organized a service-learning initiative on Green Island. After four months of planning, nearly 30 students came together to work with local children, care for the elderly, and serve the community, bringing warmth and vitality to the island. The Po-Ya School’s Director Wang Chung-Ming remarked that Po-Ya School’s education is not about immediate results but about mutual support, patience, and growth. Professor Wu Po-Han highlighted how students, through this self-led service project, learned empathy and how to love and support others, embodying the school’s guiding principle: “Be bright. Be you. Be someone’s light!”

AI and Big Data: Dual Engines Driving Wall Street Trends; Tunghai University and Ministry of Education Join Forces to Launch a Big Data Micro Program
To meet the growing need for interdisciplinary IT talent, the Ministry of Education (MOE) is rolling out programs to train professionals in using AI and data science for analysis. With funding from the MOE, Tunghai University has launched the “Big Data in Education Micro Program.” This program combines AI and big data to prepare Taiwan's next generation of top talent, giving students the skills and knowledge needed to understand and apply data-driven market analysis, just like on Wall Street. The curriculum integrates expertise from the College of Engineering, the Department of Statistics, the Department of Computer Science, the Graduate Institute of Education, and industry professionals. As a result, the big data courses have become the most popular micro-course at Tunghai University. In the 112-2 semester, more than 200 students enrolled, learning to utilize software and cloud platforms for data analysis. The capstone projects, which use open government education-related datasets, enhance students’ practical data analysis skills while improving their ability to interpret educational data.

Taiwanese and Japanese Students Team Up to Explore Local Communities and Exchange Ideas on Aging Issues
The Department of Japanese Language and Culture at Tunghai University collaborated with Aichi Prefectural University, Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, and Human Environment University to host a Taiwan-Japan community exchange program in Showa Ward, Aichi Prefecture. Through on-site workshops, visits, field research, and presentations, Japanese Department students actively explored issues related to aging populations in Taiwan and Japan, gaining a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences in how the two countries address aging-related challenges. The event involved two months of preparation, during which each team held online meetings for cross-border discussions. Despite facing challenges such as language barriers, communication misunderstandings, and issues with real-time translation, the students overcame these difficulties with teamwork and support from their instructors. They transformed the friction experienced during the process into a foundation of mutual understanding—embodying the true spirit and purpose of the Taiwan-Japan community exchange program.
