Highlights and Achievements of the Higher Education Sprout Project at National Dong Hwa University

In the 2023-2024 Higher Education Sprout Project, National Dong Hwa University adopted the core philosophy of “30 Years of Excellence: Dong Hwa with AI”, focusing on implementing educational actions based on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sustainability. The university has excelled in deepening cross-disciplinary collaboration and achieved the following highlights:
































 



 



 


Teaching Innovation and Advancement

Teaching Innovation and Cross-disciplinary Learning




  1. Cross-disciplinary AI Application Micro-programs: Established seven micro-programs, covering smart technology, humanities and social sciences, and environmental technology, integrating theory and practice to enhance students' AI capabilities.

  2. Generative AI Implementation: Ranked 11th globally in the Generative AI Applications category in the 2024 WURI Innovative Universities Rankings.

  3. MOOCs Excellence: Received the 2024 Taiwan Open Education Excellence Award for MOOCs and Micro-credit Courses and the Demonstration Award for the Use of Open Educational Resources.

  4. Outstanding Teaching Practice Research Plans: In 2023, 31 faculty members were approved under the Teaching Practice Research Program, including one who achieved consecutive recognitions in 2021 and 2022.



Upholding Social Responsibility



Guiding Faculty and Students to Engage in Practical Learning in the Hualien-Taitung Region




  1. Campus Sustainability Development: Recognized with the Top 10 Model Universities for Sustainability Award in the 2024 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards.

  2. Environmental Education and Action: Established a disaster information platform and promoted the "Coexistence and Co-prosperity" concept through StoryMaps competitions, achieving national-level accolades.

  3. Indigenous Cultural Preservation: Held 24 courses on indigenous languages, integrating tribal culture and creative projects, culminating in a historical musical drama that won a national championship.

  4. Student Local Practices: Four student teams received funding under the 2024 Hualien Youth Dreamers initiative.



Industry-Academia Collaboration


Integrating Sustainability Themes with Hualien-Taitung's Unique Industries


  1. Optimizing Pesticide Testing Processes: Eastern Taiwan Center for Pesticide and Toxic Substance Analysis completed over 1,800 test cases this year.




  2. Expanding Biomass Energy Applications: The Energy Technology Center developed modular gasification furnace technology, aligned with the 2050 net-zero strategy, processing approximately 550 kilograms of agricultural waste this year.




  3. Encouraging Financial Certification: Students were motivated to obtain finance-related certificates, including sustainable finance credentials.




  4. Photovoltaic Technician Certification Training: Prepared students for the Ministry of Labor’s Class B technician exam, with over 50% achieving above 90% in technical tests by the end of the program.




Enhancing Public Accessibility of Higher Education Enhancing Support for Economically and Culturally Disadvantaged Students

  1. Admission of Economically Disadvantaged Students: Ensured diverse admission pathways, maintaining the ratio of disadvantaged students at 13.68%.

  2. Diverse Learning and Career Guidance Programs: Organized various pre-employment training, language enhancement, computer skills, and career counseling activities in 2023, benefiting over 300 participants. Examples include the Takeoff Team Training and TOEIC Reading Workshop.

  3. Functional Team Training for Students: Adopted the concept of "Campus as a Practical Field" to foster teamwork and leadership skills among students.
