The mission of the Tatung University (TTU) is to create a high-quality, delicate and interdisciplinary learning environment. Based on the ongoing plan “The Tatung University 2026+ Project”, the university focuses on creating TTU Learning Ecosystem, developing industry-education innovation communities, and fulfilling social responsibility, which are the fundamentals of the scheme leading towards “The Tatung University 2031+ Project".
With geographical advantages, the university has developed its characteristics by integrating industrial resources into teaching as well as shaping an interdisciplinary Engineering Creation learning setting. In such a context, TTU is dedicated to fostering their students having the capability of “interdisciplinary”, “hands-on experiences”, “innovation and entrepreneurship”, “local identity” and “global awareness”. Therefore, the students are capable of being interdisciplinary innovation practitioners with greater social awareness.
Overall, the TTU Higher Education Sprout Project has achieved the goal within the first stage of the plan in terms of implementation, the highlighted outcomes are summarized as follows:
1.To take teaching as the core and enhance the quality of teaching
In terms of curriculum, the University is with the purpose of enhancing students’ problem-solving abilities as well as interdisciplinary literacy, to this end, a first-year student at Tatung University has to take compulsory interdisciplinary courses such as “Introduction to Multiple and Cross-Discipline” and “Social Design”, which carry out with Problem-based learning approach and real-world case studies discussions. Moreover, the university has been hosting Makeathon Camp and Hult Prize over the past two years with the aim to strengthen international ties and take international collaboration into practice. In addition, the university and faculties have begun to provide bilingual programs to students after granting the “The Program on Bilingual Education for Students in College" funded by the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, the university provides diverse courses to students such as digital literacy enhancement as well as Engineering Creation Micro-credit course, which aim to deepen the core value of General Education and service-learning, also, to enhance the use of digital technologies and problem-solving skills for students.
In terms of teaching, the university has been encouraging lecturers to take part in the Teaching Practice Research Program as well as facilitating lecturers for online teaching. In addition, the university has continuously stimulated multi-innovation programs.
In terms of school policy, the university launched the policy such as taking each faculty as a core teaching unit and providing micro-credit courses stabilized. In addition, the university emphasis on setting up programmes for professional career development and double major, and interdisciplinary learning modules for International College.
In terms of teaching and quality assurance, to ensure the quality of teaching and learning, the university has carried out university-level research, conducted a substantial evaluation on the quality of teaching and students’ performance assessment, and set up an effective feedback mechanism.
2. To develop university features
Since strengthening industry-academia collaboration is the primary task, the university invites industry experts to deliver practical knowledge in a wide range of programs. While industry experts contribute industrial experiences to teaching, students gain hands-on experiences as they are able to put what they have learnt into practice. Moreover, the university intends to facilitate lecturers taking part in industry-academia collaboration, bridge academic research and industry techniques to deliver technical knowledge to innovative product development. In terms of internationalization, the university encourages students to participate in International Work Camp as well as exchange programs such as Partnership Universities, Dual Degree Program, and Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP) etc. Furthermore, the university remains a stable partnership with Iowa State University (U.S.A.), Stuttgart Technology University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Yokote City (Japan) and West Papua province (Indonesia), which equips students with international mobility.
3. To make resources more public
The Tatung University is committed to fulfilling public service and social responsibility among higher education context. To ensure social equality, the university has established policies for disadvantaged students particularly those with financial and cultural difficulties. To this end, the university offers an additional pathway for students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and gives priority to them in the admission process. In addition, the university provides academic and finial support for disadvantaged students such as offering scholarships and financial subsidies. Moreover, the university has a greater emphasis on lowering the student-teacher ratio as well as refining teaching qualification by setting up Teaching Award policy. The university as well continuously working on research and innovation services development, and keep the university admissions transparency.
4. To fulfil the university’s social responsibility
The university undertakes the mission of “fostering talents, local awareness and internationalization”, builds on the core values of “human-oriented”, “being a friendly neighbor” and “make friends around the world”, and then put them into practice fulfilling its social responsibility.
In terms of involving an action plan for Poison-Free Farming, the new technique is developed to assist farmers to succeed in finding solutions since biotechnology and industry design are the areas of special expertise for Tatung University.
In terms of local caring, the university focuses on providing assistance for migrant workers and New Immigrants in life skills and career development, which creates local connections as well as enhances local identity towards the aim of “learning in place”.
In cooperation with the government's New Southbound Policy, the university has developed Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) delivered by international online collaboration, which aims to promote the use of new energy across the South-East Asia region.
In terms of innovative design and critical thinking, the university is continuously working on well-being innovation for building up an age-friendly city.
