Highlights of 2022 Higher Education Sprout Project
“The integration of communication professions into the curricula across diverse departments”, “the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills” and “the industry-academia collaboration for interdisciplinary innovation” are characteristics of SHU's curriculum design. Throughout the years of the Higher Education Sprout Project, these characteristics will continue to be implemented and synthesized with the aims of the Medium-Term Development Plan as well, such as “excellent teaching”, “high-quality research”, “citizenship with global perspectives” and “sustainable campus.” The university has put the Higher Education Sprout Project (2022) into action to accomplish its 4 aims and 17 tactics. The highlights of the project are outlined below:
Innovative curriculum reform
(1) Improving the course content of "Omni Media Literacy" to focus on the current status and future perspectives of related industries and students' reflective learning
(2) Improving the course content of “Computational Thinking and Programming” for logical thinking and problem-solving
(3) Developing innovative teaching materials for 156 courses (174 teachers), and enhancing teaching effectiveness through the exchange of experience in 20 professional learning communities
(4) Offering 19 industrial-academy collaboration courses, as well as dispatching 21 students for industrial internships or employment as part of the current industrial development trend
Interdisciplinary learning, the accumulation of practical experience and learning outcomes
(1) Holding English proficiency simulation tests for freshmen, and establishing foreign language learning environments in English and Japanese Corners
(2) Giving Awards for student groups (141 teams) who participated in international, national, and regional competitions, performances, or charitable activities.
(3) Holding "the 2022 RISING AWARDS," the short film creation contest. The first stage of the proposal involved 104 teams, and 15 teams were shortlisted for the second stage for shooting.
(4) Producing 87 high-quality radio programs and 61 Podcast programs, and training 22 audio-visual professionals
Developing interdisciplinary learning on the basis of digital communications and data Intelligence
(1) Producing and scheduling the youth forum programs for the interdisciplinary cooperation, and developing omnimedia talents through live broadcasts and sport events.
(2)The cutting-edge hands-on courses will be offered in the new LED Virtual Studio, e.g., “Motion capture editing techniques” and “Creative three-dimensional design”.
(3) Executing the project of 5G augmented reality game “Asyra,” and holding an international conference in which 12 papers in total were published.
Creating efficient teaching and learning environments with a comprehensive learning guidance program
(1) Increasing educational and financial aids, and improving the instruction mechanism
(2) Establishing “LED Virtual Studio,” and expanding equipment of “Omni Media Center, ” “8K Cinema,” “Virtual Desktop Infrastructure,” “Podcast/ Live Streaming Studio,” and “7 Teaching and Research Centers” for the development of media production and intelligent data
Collaboration with local secondary schools and creating community-wide cooperative relationships
(1) Promoting specialized courses such as speech communication, filmmaking as empowerment, computer programming, humanities and social sciences, English oral expression, and law-related education to share the learning achievements with the neighborhood secondary education institutes
(2) Utilizing community news collecting, local social media management, senior care, video capture recording, and digital mapping to help build the image of the communities around the university and the local businesses
(3) Joining the USR union in the Wenshan and Shidin areas for resource sharing and local rejuvenation
