Cultivate students' essential capability and employability, construct interdisciplinary learning environments, and promote STEAM learning to prepare all students for the future: The medication examination pass rate of Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) is higher than the national average. We endeavor to develop students’ capacities in biological medicine and information engineering, with all our students undertaking programing language courses. The projects of information technology, artificial intelligence, and industry-academy cooperation had won numerous prizes. For example, the red dot labeling system of medical image won the National Innovation Award. To promote students’ interdisciplinary learning by cultivating their second specialty, the university has developed 24 interdisciplinary programs and collaborated with National Chung Hsing University and Soochow University to provide students with multidisciplinary learning environments. The number of students who pursued cross-school double majors has increased by 40%. Thirty-five teachers in CSMU had received advanced design thinking education certificates. The rate of graduates who passed the Civil Service Senior Examination within three years post-graduation ranked tenth among all the private universities.
2. Innovative teaching strategies application rate has increased every year; high-quality whole-person education; many of the CSMU fellows won awards in medicine, teaching and research: The number of teachers who participate in the Teaching Practice Research Program has increased every year, with the pass rate of 47% in 2021. Outstanding Teaching Practice Research Program achievements are published in international journals, with more than 110 journal articles included in the Web of Science Core Collection. The CSMU iGEM team has won gold medals five times in the iGEM International Genetic Engineering Machine Design Competition since 2017. Numerous student teams have won prizes in national Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship competitions.
[Develop University Characteristics] – contribute to societal healthcare needs with our medical professionals to fulfill SDG 3, 4, 8, 17
1. SDG3 "Good Health and Well-being" ranked fourth nationally in Times Higher Education World University Rankings: CSMU has constructed an intelligent medical network for preventive medicine, contributing to the prevention of metabolic syndrome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CSMU team proposed the method of sanitizing medical masks with rice cookers, helping ease the medical necessity needs. Also, we have developed the cancer database and openly shared it worldwide; we provide poison detection services for testing toxic substances and heavy metals in traditional Chinese medicine.
2. The strength of dental medicine, elderly and dementia healthcare provides society with high-quality medical services: The Dental Medicine Education and Research Center in Central Taiwan held national conferences concerning education and techniques. CSMU Dementia Integrated Care Center has provided healthcare services to more than one thousand disabled people and won first prize in the Golden Care Awards of Taichung Long-Term Care.
[Promoting Higher Education Accessibility] – promote social motility and make administrative affairs openly accessible, to fulfill SDG 1, 4, 8:
1. Enhance socioeconomically disadvantaged students’ academic performance: The number of socioeconomically disadvantaged students participating in counseling and empowering programs has been increasing every year. Students who participated in relevant empowering programs had better academic performance (5 scores on average) and spent less time (30% reduction) doing part-time jobs than those who did not take part in it.
2. Make the university’s administrative affairs open and accessible to provide an evidence-based foundation for the university’s development plans and to stabilize the retention rate: Yearly results of institutional research are accessible on the CSMU webpage to help the university form evidence-based development plans. Also, students’ competency levels are analyzed to provide feedback for developing the Innovation and Interdisciplinary College and relevant courses.
