Accomplishments and Highlights of 2022 Higher Education Sprout Project

 

Students of the Colleges of Mandarin-English interdisciplinary and multi-instructor teaching demonstrate fruitful achievements in learning

Tunghai University continues promoting the “University Colleges Innovative Experimental Project," an integrated curriculum of general studies in Mandarin, English, and a variety of fields. The University Colleges’ Achievement Exhibition allowed students from different colleges and departments to demonstrate what they have learned in their respective expertise, as well as interdisciplinary studies. The all-encompassing student works include the intelligent trash bin, natural fragrance-based essential oil, A Bug’s Life, and other works closely associated with life and environmental sustainability. The exhibition is a display of the fruitful achievements of interdisciplinary and multi-instructor teaching.

Partnered with the National Museum of Natural Science and French Office in Taipei to promote Mission Mars the competition to the international level

In addition to promoting various innovative teaching models, Tunghai University develops diverse learning environments and venues with external partners. In recent years, we continue to partner with the National Museum of Natural Science on hosting a national competition, Mission Mars to promote popular science and enhance national science competency. Students of the Colleges of Science, Engineering, International Studies, Fine Arts and Creative Design, Agricultural Health present science-based strategies developed in hands-on projects aimed at addressing survival issues on Mars and extreme climate. The project also enhances cross-sector connection and co-creation with high school partners by engaging high school students in learning science knowledge and proposing solutions jointly. Tunghai University partnered with French Office in Taipei this year on the rocket launching ceremony to Mars base in the university’s second campus. The launch of two rockets that represented Tunghai University and France respectively marked the start of collaboration on promoting Mission Mars the competition to the international level.

2022 Presidents' Forum of the Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts Universities, Tunghai University Liberal Arts Education 4.0 widely acclaimed

As an exemplary university with liberal arts education at its core, Tunghai University aspires to create an immersive learning environment deeply rooted in liberal arts. At the fifth Presidents’ Forum of the Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts, Tunghai University Vice President Liu Jeng spoke on the transformation of Tunghai’s liberal arts education from 1.0 to 4.0 on behalf of the school. He also shared President Chang Kuo-En’s new concepts proposed for liberal arts education, which include autonomous learning, the provision of learning frameworks, and teacher-friend companionship. Through experiment-based education and hands-on practices aided with digital learning, the school aims to be present and practical as we embrace the future. The experience sharing and dialogue among representatives at the forum were widely acclaimed.

Tunghai University won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the 2022 Intelligent TCSP x Innovation Yue-Nong Cup

Tunghai University integrates innovative and entrepreneurial resources on and off campus, actively promotes industry-academia collaboration and interdisciplinary exchanges, and enhances the competencies of student teams in interdisciplinary learning for innovation and entrepreneurship. For three consecutive years, we have partnered with Taichung Software Park to hold the TCSP and Yue-Nong Cup. In the competition themed intelligent innovation, intelligent manufacturing, and intelligent medicine this year, student teams of Tunghai University won 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. In the future, the school will continue to bridge industry and academia by offering incubation resources and building an environment beneficial to student entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Online academic events on global mobility by the Department of Food Science

To increase global competitiveness and foster professional talents equipped with a global perspective, the Department of Food Science, Agricultural College launched 4 online forums with partner universities, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Tottori University, Hokkaido University, and Tokyo University of Agriculture. The forums were introduced with courses on different fields of expertise and sessions for academic exchange presided over by Japanese professors via video conferencing. Students were able to acquire professional knowledge in various fields and develop a global perspective in such international academic exchanges.

Tunghai University 2022 International Week, Pathways to a Thriving Future

To promote diverse cultural exchanges and build an international campus, Tunghai University launched this year’s international week under the theme, Pathways to a Thriving Future. We aspire for students to embrace a thriving future regardless of the difficulties and challenges imposed by the pandemic. During the campaign, foreign students presented various displays of their cultures and foods, engaging all students in international interactive experiences.

Cross-sector collaboration with Carrefour to cultivate talents in sustainable agriculture and health sectors

Leveraging the impact of CSR and USR to cultivate green-collar talents, Tunghai University signed an MOU on Talent Cultivation in Sustainable Agriculture and Health Sectors with Carrefour as the first university in Taiwan to partner with a corporate on cultivating talents in sustainable animal husbandry. The MOU outlined joint efforts to promote talent cultivation in sustainable agriculture and health sectors, enhance animal welfare, conduct regular reciprocal visits for industry-academic exchange, expand industry-academic research projects, host industry seminars, and forums on related technologies and exchanges.

2022 Tunghai ‧ Food ‧ Sustainability Hackathon

In response to the robust global trend of sustainability, Tunghai University launched the first “Tunghai ‧ Food ‧ Sustainability Hackathon” in partnership with Carrefour. Themed around sustainability, the campaign took participants to explore the current industry status through field visits and guided them to brainstorm and come up with impactful solutions in an issue-based hackathon that focused on real-world social issues, such as sustainable development, environmental issues, food safety, circular economy, elderly health, intelligent campus, etc.

Tunghai University won 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze awards in the Asia-Pacific and Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards as the most outstanding university for two consecutive years

In the 2022 Asia-Pacific Sustainability Action Awards, Tunghai University won the gold award with “AI Technology for SDGs” and 3 silver and 1 bronze awards. In Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards, Tunghai University was honored with 2 gold awards “Water Environmental Education 1+1>2” and “Sustainability Impact Co-Creation Platform.” As for “From Labor Education to Sustainable Charity for Education,” Tunghai University won a bronze award. Moreover, the school established the Office of Sustainable Development and a “Smart Carbon-Neutral Park” on campus this year, dedicated to the education and training of integrated AI and net-zero emissions, industry connection, and technology research and development. In the future, general education and reformed labor education will be further consolidated to exert greater social impact as the school delivers its social responsibility and its role in sustainable development.

Tunghai University USR and local connection, Dadushan walking tour

The University Social Responsibility Project organized an interdisciplinary team consisting of Tunghai teachers and worked with local elementary and junior high schools, and community-based & non-profit organizations. The project developed innovative courses for elementary and junior high school students, established the Dadushan local knowledge platform, launched community campaign spots, and proposed local revitalization plans. By addressing contemporary needs for innovation in basic education and local revitalization, Tunghai University actively fulfills the school's university social responsibility. Dadushan Local Educational Revitalization USR project held the “Dadushan Community Carnival” in Ruijing Community in Dadu District, Taichung City. Through community walking tours, a variety of experience activities and old photos, the carnival connected and revitalized residents and the community.

Tunghai University’s “Open Retirement Village x Social Prescription” won 3 excellence awards in the 2022 University Social Responsibility Expo

In delivering university social responsibility, the Center for Active Aging and Technology Innovation has been devoted to the practice and collaboration project on community elderly support system for 5 years in Xitun District, Taichung City. At the 2022 USR Expo, “Open Retirement Village x Social Prescription” attracted considerable attention and won 3 excellence awards in categories of popular microcinema, popular photography, and popular interaction awards.

Tunghai University won 3 awards at the Global Views USR Awards as the most noted winner among USR practitioners

Tunghai University’s devotion to and achievements in fulfilling social responsibility while sustaining innovation have been recognized in various awards. At the third USR Award Ceremony hosted by Global Views, Tunghai University was awarded a first prize and 2 model awards. The validation highlighted the school's extraordinary achievements in promoting SDGs in sustainable development with digital AI applications.

Teachers and students have also put their care for disadvantaged communities and society into action. The school brought together the interdisciplinary expertise of teachers and students to create sustainable values in the public-private Dongda River Rehabilitation Project in partnership with the Water Resource Bureau of Taichung City Government. In addition, Donda River Culture and Environmental Education Center were built for consistent environmental education. The successful experience of revitalizing Dongda River has further been applied to Fazi River thanks to the effort of Chief Officer Lin Hui-Chen for Research and Development that contributed to the joint initiative titled, “one university protects one river”. The campaign involved Taichung City Government and four universities in Central Taiwan.
