Outcomes of the Higher Education Sprout Project - Master Plan in 2021
Implement Educational Innovation and Improve the Quality of Education
The College of Medicine takes full advantage of the equipment and facilities of the Center for Clinical Skill & Simulation (CCSS) to advance featured clinical skills of each department. Furthermore, we continue to promote long-term health care, smart medicine, medical engineering, and the development of medical devices, etc. We also place great importance on the elevation of students’ knowledge and skills in the subjects of humanities and social sciences. Moreover, CGU continues carrying out the “Plan for Fostering Chang Gung Interdisciplinary Talents”, through which students’ leadership skills, cross-domain learning, and international mobility are developed. At the same time, the university also offers a compulsory course “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” to all freshman students to introduce to students a new era of artificial intelligence. More than 50% of our students have enrolled in the course of computer programming. Also worth mentioning is that CGU executes the Bilingual Education for University Students Project and hosts EMI (English as a Media for Instruction) workshops for all teachers. In response to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, we avidly promote long-distance education by using a variety of software and digital learning platforms, to ensure our students have a high-quality learning experience.
Develop School Features
Our interdisciplinary research centers develop key technologies and jointly participate in domestic and international organizations to assist in solving significant social and environmental issues. For instance, the Molecular Medicine Research Center continued participating in the US Cancer Moonshot Program to contribute to the prevention of cancer. The Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections continued working with international organizations to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The research center developed the "New Coronavirus Neutralizing Antibody Detection Technology" and won the silver award of the “Technology Transfer Award” of the 2021 Taipei Biotech Awards, as well as the "Outstanding Technology Transfer Contribution Award" of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2021. In conjunction with the College of Engineering, the Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections has successfully developed the "COVID-19 Neutralizing Antibody Testing Automation Platform" and created the first automatic ELISA miniature speedy detection machine, which can increase the convenience and boost the detection capacity in the clinical setting. The university also hired Emeritus Professor Dr. Siamon Gordon of the Oxford University in UK as a distinguished chair professor to supervise the immunology team. In addition, the university hired Professor Tzyy-Choou Wu of the Gynecologic Pathology Division of Johns Hopkins University as an academic consultant to supervise the translational medicine research in immunological mechanisms and vaccine development. The US-based Stanford University has recently released a list of World's Top 2% Scientists in 2021. Chang Gung University was ranked the 9th in Taiwan (1st among all private universities). According to the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy in 2021, CGU was ranked at the 456th place globally and the 1st among all private comprehensive universities in Taiwan. Based on the 2021 CWTS Leiden Ranking exclusively based on bibliometric indicators published by Leiden University in the Netherlands, CGU was ranked within the top 300 in the world and the 2nd in Taiwan, closely following National Taiwan University. CGU is indeed an exemplary university that is impactful on Taiwan’s scientific development.
Enhance the Public Value of Higher Education
The university continues increasing and guaranteeing the opportunities to study for underprivileged students. To create a friendly learning environment for underprivileged students, the university provides additional admission quota, financial support and subsidies for them. Additionally, we also strengthen the network of advisors to care for underprivileged students – there are 216 class advisors and 26 departmental advisors available. In 2021, there were 430 underprivileged students, and 801 counselling and guidance sessions were offered. The counselling and guidance rate reached 186.28%. The Center for Institutional Research continues the preliminary data analysis of each department, office, and unit. The center also integrates other internal and external databases and social media data, which serves as an important foundation for data-oriented quantitative management. Furthermore, the center uses the issue analysis of school affairs and customized dashboards to assist each department and unit in evaluating effectiveness and making decisions.
Fulfill Social Responsibility
The university actively promotes the industry-academia collaboration. In 2021, the industry-academia collaboration exceeded NTD$160,000,000, and the technology transfer exceeded NTD$74,000,000. Among them, Professor Meng-Tsan Tsai developed the "portable multi-functional 3D skin light detector" and won "the 18th National Innovation Award". He also established the university’s first value-creation start-up company in March 2021 and completed the technology transfer in June of the same year. The total value amounted to NTD$40,000,000. In addition, the university continues promoting the USR HUB project. The main themes are “conservation and reinvention of local cultures” and “social support for underprivileged groups”. In 2021, a total of 235 students and teachers participated in the USR empowerment activities. Moreover, we also published the “Natural Ecological Observation Manual 100 – the Taoyuan Guishan District”. This book has been nominated as a teaching material for natural science courses by Shan-Ding Elementary School in the Guishan District. It is beneficial to the local ecological education.
