Nowadays, in response to the needs and trends of the world in the future, we are focusing on "Social Responsibility" and "Global Issues", taking innovation in teaching and learning as the policy, and developing universities with an overall excellence in teaching, research and social responsibility.

Interdisciplinary Platform & Learning Innovation

The main axis in Higher Education SPROUT Project of NCKU (From Engaged Academics to Deep Learning) is “Educational Innovation” and “Social Responsibility.” The innovation of higher education not only brings instruction from individual practice to community-based participatory research activity but represents the innovation of teaching and learning is the core of future university education.

To meet the demand for more professional and multiplexing human in the future world, NCKU has established the virtual “College X” as the interdisciplinary platform. With new applications such as artificial intelligence and 5G, computing will infiltrate into all walks of life, 2020, Miin Wu School of Computing established in the Cheng Kung Innovation Center - MACRONIX Hall, combining computing science, AI, data science and related disciplines, to become an interdisciplinary school. Not only create the value to enterprises, but these technologies are very likely to change society and become an important key to solve problems for all mankind. By introducing "interdisciplinary future issues" and "practical courses" through the courses, integrating the literacy courses, and designing interdisciplinary teaching modules, it makes College X and Miin Wu school of computing become a practical field. Through those two colleges, NCKU wants to cultivate students to become "future talents" with the ability to ask questions, express narratives, think deeply and solve problems.

2020, with the goal of implementing teaching innovation and improving teaching quality, the Office of Academic Affairs has been revising the regulations to establish a cross-field learning and teaching friendly environment. Faculty are also to encouraged to forming teaching community for peer and professional learning. Through teaching community, we continue to expand the innovative teaching mode of "New General Education" to "New Eighteen Weeks (15+3)". New Eighteen Weeks allow faculty to design the course by content instead of weeks. Without the constrain of regular 18 weeks, faculty can have more possibility to implement the interdisciplinary through collaborate and jointly design courses. Even more, this 15+3 mode is the pilot for future "third semester" and "school-wide cross-domain day".

With the goal of strengthening students' learning motivation and construe college features courses, College X and 9 colleges has been working together to restructure the curriculum and the renewal of teaching content and methods. For example: College of Liberal Arts focuses on deepening and broadening academics, integrating local and international issues, and embed into course design and offering issues-oriented courses such as gender, education, and social movement; College of Science has been offering interdisciplinary modular curriculum and scale up every year. This term even included medical school. Under the pandemic impact, there are still nearly 1,500 people electing courses; College of Engineering continues to conduct interdisciplinary and professional cooperation through "engineering cross-domain integration"; College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has focus on AI topic and cultivate cross-domain talents to respond to social needs; College of Planning and Design offers courses and records the solutions to the future development of human beings; College of Management integrates science and technology into professional development, and develops practical and international courses; College of Medicine implements the spirit of holistic care into clinical courses and introduce 3D images technology to assist surgical teaching; College of Social Sciences has adopted the "Humanities, Society and Technology Foresight Talent Cultivation Program" to modularize professional courses to assist cross-domain learning within the school; College of Bioscience and Biotechnology continues to adopt SDG as the core to develop international cooperation for both teachers and students.

With the goal of aiming to be an interdisciplinary-friendly learning and teaching environment and fulfill the needs of self-learning, we integrate virtual online learning and “course-raising” systems to enhance students' self-learning ability. In 2020, at least 59,348 person-time participated in cross-domain learning/ self-learning system. National Cheng Kung University also completed the establishment of a "micro- Interdisciplinary Credit Program " mechanism, encouraging students to clarify their learning path while learning across fields and to conduct "directionally cross-field learning".

With the goal of engaged academics and worldwide learning, NCKU puts special emphasis on the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for cultivating talents, which are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly. We focus on the concept of “Meeting the World's Wide-Ranging Needs,” “Depth Combination in Cross-domain Disciplinary ”and “Sustainable Thinking in Social and Environmental Transitions” NCKU is an excellent university in teaching, research, and social responsibility that cultivates students to become “knowledge practitioners who can respond to the future.”

As an institution of higher education, NCKU has always been dedicated to the mission of cultivating domestic elite talent, and spares no effort in coordinating resources and talents in industry, government, academia and research area. Whether it is the response to social crisis, promotion of industrial innovation, the ranking among international universities or the high regard by the domestic industry, etc., the remarkable outcomes we have shown are obvious to all. In the face of ever-changing international trends, we must remain flexible and always be conscious, reflect on our own shortcomings, and have the courage to make reforms.
